Celebrating Father’s Day
Sunday 1 September is Father’s Day, a day to recognise all that dads do for their families.
Celebrations and dates differ from culture to culture, however no matter the country it is all about dads, and father figures. In America, the tradition dates back to 1910 founded there by Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised six children as a single parent.
Religious history marks it as a Catholic holiday celebrating fatherhood, dating back to the Middle Ages, and taking place in March, coinciding with the Feast of St. Joseph. An even earlier tribute to fathers goes back almost 4000 years in history to Babylonia, when a youth named Elmesu carved the first known Father’s Day card in clay. His special message wished his father good health and a long life.
These days, Father’s Day is often marked with the giving of gifts, and treating dad to a special day. From breakfast in bed, to a barbecue with friends and family, it’s still a day to say thank you to the special men in our lives.
