Care for your teeth: Strowan Oral Surgery

Dental decay can lead to tooth cavities, gum disease and poor oral hygiene and has also been linked to diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Leading oral surgeon at Strowan Oral Surgery, Dr Keira Malone, says regular dental check-ups can identify any tooth or gum issues early and help prevent dental disease with routine oral surveillance.

One procedure Keira recommends is dental implants. “Dental implants are particularly good for people having problems with retention and movement of dentures, along with ACC cases where teeth have been traumatised and/or fractured or lost.”

Dental implants provide greater retention, stability and support compared to removable partial dentures or complete dentures and avoid destruction of adjacent natural teeth for bridge preparations.

Additionally, as dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone, they bond with the bone and act like real teeth. Implant restorations are most like natural teeth in feel, look and function.

Another specialist procedure that Keira performs at her rooms is the Malo All-on-4 technique.

Dr Paulo Malo revolutionised reconstructive dental surgery and implants when he created the Malo All-on-4 technique.

When natural teeth are lost, the supporting jaw bone loses height and width. The All-on-4 technique is an alternative to removable dentures and avoids the need for significant bone grafting procedures.

This technique has become one of the most significant advances in the area of dental implantology. Dr Keira Malone has been taught overseas in person by Dr Malo this world recognised revolutionary technique.

Now recognised as the superior treatment option for full-arch teeth replacements, the innovation of the All-on-4 technique is that it adopts a 45° angle for posterior implants.

By tilting the implants, the posterior regions with compromised bone loss can be avoided and a better quality of bone is used, which alleviates the need for bone-grafting.

The All-on-4 technique has a high success rate and has become an increasingly popular treatment for oral rehabilitation amongst expert surgeons around the globe.

Latest techniques

Keira’s oral surgery credentials are impressive. She has spent 14 years training and most recently trained at Trinity College, Dublin, where she achieved the highest grade ever in the oral surgery clinical doctorate programme.

One of only two female oral surgeons in New Zealand, Keira continues to increase her knowledge, keeping up with the latest techniques, including using cutting-edge technology.

“The field I work in is both fascinating and an important area of health. I have taught undergraduate and postgraduate students in oral surgery and conscious sedation in Ireland and Australia,” she explains.

“I am humbled to have a career that spans the world combining academia, clinical application and teaching.”
