Bonjour, broderie

Broderie anglaise, French for English embroidery, is the answer to your summer fashion woes.

Airy, lightweight, dreamy, and effortless (very Cloud Dancer-esque), broderie brings wearability and femininity to the summer wardrobe rotation, perfect for looming Valentine’s and ‘Galentine’s’ Day dates – and warm weather in general. A timeless needlework technique dating back to 16th century Eastern Europe, then popularised in 19th century England, its signature cutwork, or eyelets, introduce a fascinating, breathable feature to fabric. From the late Brigitte Bardot to boho-style master Sienna Miller, broderie has rarely left fashion’s fingertips.

Often crafted onto thicker textiles such as cotton and linen, it lends itself like lace but ‘scaled-up’ – suitable for day to night wear. Beat the heat (and still look chic) with these nine broderie-inspired picks.
