Adding WOW to family treasures: McDonald & Hartshorne

Sustainability is uppermost in many people’s minds these days, and furniture is one area when it can be put to good use.

I nstead of buying new, think about refurbishing instead. Many older pieces of furniture have good bones and/or sentimental value, they just need freshening up to add a “wow” factor.

Christchurch resident Danielle thought likewise when coming across a chair and footstool that belonged to her fiancé John’s mother Veda, for many years. “When she passed, both pieces stayed with John as he is the only member of his immediate family remaining,” says Danielle.

“When we bought our house together late last year, I decided to surprise John and have them given some much deserved “TLC” to keep them in the best condition. Now, they will remain in the family and one day be passed to the next generation,” she adds.

Danielle headed along to leading furniture and upholstery business McDonald & Hartshorne, which excels in the repair and restoration of tired, worn furniture, to spring her surprise. She selected the Warwick Borchelli range, design: Capitano, colour: Onyx for the new upholstery. “I was attracted to the timeless design and colour of the fabric, and felt having the timber restored and polished in ebony highlights its classic style.”

Established in 2004, McDonald & Hartshorne are experts at breathing new life into old furniture. Customers can simply email a photo of the item to the office for evaluation, then discuss their vision with business Co-director and Sales Manager, Keith Hartshorne, at a follow-up consultation.

Keith brings his years of experience in the furniture and upholstery industry to every job, and being the first point of contact, customers are assured they have all the information they need as to their repair requirements. Co-director, Steve McDonald, is the expert upholsterer behind the business and he, along with his experienced and qualified team, love the small repair jobs just as much as the larger projects. Another service available here is help with furniture insurance claims. This straight forward process usually sees Keith visiting the customer’s home to assess the piece before giving his insurance quote.
