Lake Tekapo offers breathtaking scenery, outdoor activities, and opportunities for relaxation.
Here’s a plan to help you make the most of your weekend in Tekapo:
Day 1
Arrive in Tekapo and check into your accommodation. Assorted options are available including hotels, lodges, and holiday homes.
Indulge in a delicious breakfast at one of the local cafés or bakeries.
Take in the stunning views of the lake and mountains and snap some photos.
Explore the nearby Bronze Sheepdog Statue, commemorating the hardworking sheepdogs of New Zealand.
If you are visiting during the winter, consider heading to Mt Dobson for the afternoon, or Roundhill Ski Area for a day or night skiing session, or tubing on their dedicated snow tube park.
In the evening, you can enjoy a glorious dinner at one of Tekapo’s renowned restaurants, and finish the night with stargazing at Mount John Observatory. Tekapo is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best places for stargazing in the Southern Hemisphere.
Day 2
Wake up early and embark on a sunrise photography tour. Capture the incredible beauty of the lake, mountains, and the famous Church of the Good Shepherd in the soft morning light.
For ski enthusiasts, venture to one of the local ski areas and give it your all. Alternatively for a girls’ trip, take advantage of the pamper packages offered by local businesses to rejuvenate and reset with your posse. Or for a bit of fun, you could enjoy a wine tour at one of the the nearby vineyards.
In the afternoon, unwind and relax at the hot pools while enjoying panoramic views of the lake, especially if you are wanting to soak your sore muscles after skiing. Boost your energy with an evening meal and then head back home.
