A night to remember: Isaac Theatre Royal
Monumental, captivating, history-making. That is how you might describe the celebration that marked 10 years of standing strong once again, for one of Christchurch’s renowned arts establishments.
The Isaac Theatre Royal’s Anniversary Variety Gala was an unforgettable celebration of resilience, creativity, and community, marketing and deveolopment manager Bianca Lindstrom says. Opening the evening was none other than Sir Ian McKellen, whose surprise video message from London’s West End was both entertaining and heartwarming, setting the tone for a spectacular night.
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) took centre stage—literally—playing from the stage rather than the orchestra pit, to create a more immersive and electrifying audience experience.
Hosts Anika Moa and Jason Gunn, true Cantabrians, brought hilarity and heartfelt warmth, guiding the audience through a night of show-stopping performances that celebrated Christchurch’s remarkable rebuild.
Standouts from the evening included ballet duo Hamish Giddens and Tamison Soppert, with a graceful artistry that captivated the audience. At just 14, Tamison displayed breathtaking elegance and poise, marking her as a rising star. The aerial tango by EPIC artists was mesmerising, sultry, and beautifully paired with violinist Fiona Pears, whose tango-infused melodies added depth and flair.
The evening also saw the launch of the Live & Local initiative with local singer-songwriter Steffany Beck performing an original piece, Bianca adds, followed by powerhouse Kiwi musicians from the Come Together supergroup featuring Julia Deans alongside the CSO. Special appearances by Richard O’Brien and Miriam Margolyes, the latter performing Charles Dickens with unmatched charm, were true highlights. Showbiz Christchurch had the audience dancing in their seats with a medley from MAMMA MIA!, while Mark Hadlow and Jared Holt delivered a humorous yet stunning rendition of Nessun Dorma in Christ’s College uniforms.
The night also brought the thunderous energy of Takumi Japanese drummers, spoken word poetry, hip-hop, comedy, and the ethereal voices of NZ Opera. The finale, an all-cast performance of the Kiwi classic Welcome Home, led by Anika Moa and the CSO, was a heartfelt conclusion that brought the full house to its feet.
This gala was more than a celebration; it was a testament to the spirit of Christchurch and the Isaac Theatre Royal, showcasing its place as a cornerstone of creativity and culture.
