A night of magic: Isaac Theatre Royal

Ten years ago on 17 November, 2014, a resilient Christchurch community gathered in anticipation. After years of uncertainty following the devastating earthquakes, the doors of the iconic Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) would swing open once again to reclaim its place in the city’s cultural heart. For many, the idea of the old lady’s grand reopening had once seemed an impossible dream. The heritage building, rich in history and memories, was all but thought gone, its future hanging in the balance.

Unwavering determination followed, from passionate patrons and legendary artists like Sir Ian McKellen, who toured New Zealand to raise much-needed funds. Richard O’Brien, Miriam Margoyles, and others donated their ticket sales to support the theatre. Thanks to them, the dream of restoring the ITR to its former glory became a reality.

These efforts ensured that the theatre could once again host performances on its hallowed wooden stage, preserving its legacy for generations to come. A decade later, its heritage will be marked, celebrating the milestone with an unforgettable Variety Gala, presented by Newstalk ZB and the Isaac Theatre Royal. On 17 November, 2024, the establishment will come alive with a dazzling array of performances that celebrate the theatre’s remarkable past and look ahead to an exciting future.

The gala promises something for everyone. Hosted by beloved Kiwi entertainers Anika Moa and Jason Gunn, the evening will feature spellbinding performances from opera stars, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Audiences can also expect appearances from some familiar faces of television and stage, along with musical magic from Julia Deans performing with Come Together.

The eclectic line-up doesn’t stop there. Feel the pulse of Japanese drummers, be captivated by spoken word poets, and rock out to the sounds of some of New Zealand’s finest musicians. Richard O’Brien, famed for The Rocky Horror Show, will also grace the stage, adding his signature flair to this already star-studded event. Comedians, rock ‘n’ rollers, and a dash of musical theatre sparkle ensure the gala will be a night of pure entertainment.

Tickets are on sale now at Ticketek, so secure your seat and be part of this momentous celebration. The Isaac Theatre Royal’s 10-year anniversary gala will reflect on the incredible journey of the past decade, and also its exciting new programming strategy, ensuring that the next 10 years will be just as magical.
