A classy Italian
Unveiling a new sports car, such as the Maserati MC20 (above) is always an event.
The Italian trident’s newest mid-engine flagship supercar has arrived in Christchurch and was recently unveiled by local Maserati agents Euromarque at the Christchurch Art Gallery.
The vehicle marks the start of an important new chapter for the Maserati brand and is its first all-out supercar since the MC12, which ended production
in 2005.
“The MC20 is Maserati’s first supercar in over a decade and the beginning of a new direction for the brand while still keeping to its racing roots,” says Euromarque Head of Maserati Sales, Dylan McKenzie.
Aside from sporting the textbook supercar stance, the MC20 sports a collection of numbers which puts it firmly in serious performance bracket.
Powered by an F1 derived 3.0L twin-turbo V6 engine producing 630HP and 730Nm, it will reach the New Zealand open road speed limit from a standstill in
2.9 seconds and go on to reach 325km/h flat out.
McKenzie adds that we should expect the MC20’s powerplant in all future flagship Maserati Trofeo models. “It replaces the outgoing Ferrari derived 3.8L twin-turbo V8 and will be used in all new Trofeo models including the new Grecale SUV,” he says. “Hybrid and full EV variants have also both been announced for the future.”
The MC20 tips the scales at 1500kg thanks to an all-carbon fibre monocoque chassis which not only weighs 100kg on its own, but also provides high torsional and bending stiffness.
Slide inside via the MC20’s butterfly doors and you are greeted with a superbly refined cabin, devoid of unnecessary add-ons. That carbon tub also provides ease
of entry and exit, unusual for a supercar like this.
Also available as the open top Cielo, the MC20 is sold out until early 2023. Two so far are expected to call Christchurch home, so keep a look out for this handsome Italian thoroughbred on Canterbury roads soon.
