For its stunning design of a Fendalton home, Christchurch-based design practice PRau Architects has taken home a win in the New Zealand Institute of Architects regional awards.

Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a team to create a stunning home. From the vision of the architect to the skill and care of the tradespeople, a build that ticks all the boxes from function to form takes a range of talents – including stonemasonry to swimming pool installation.

The recent win by PRau Architects in the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) regional awards for their Fendalton build is just such a team effort.

A stunning build showcasing the beauty of stone, timber, plaster, and stainless steel to create warm and carefully considered interiors, the NZIA judges said, “this substantial family home shows a confident use of materials, craftsmanship, and architectural detail, shaped through a long and trusting relationship between the client and architect. That close collaboration has created a carefully resolved home where materials, detailing, and spaces are handled with clarity and care.

“Generous yet controlled, the project demonstrates how long-term collaboration can create architecture of lasting quality.”

Skilful use of natural materials like stone and wood in the Fendation build was complimented by NZIA judges.

Build

Crafted by H+M Builders and meticulously designed by architect Phil Redmond of PRau, the challenge of bringing Phil’s vision to life was respectfully handled by the team at H+M Builders.

“This is a project we’re extremely proud of,” says managing director Matt Stephens. “It showcases a refined balance of imported and locally sourced natural products, executed with an exceptional level of detail. A striking stainless-steel roof crowns the residence, complementing the rich natural texture of Timaru Bluestone features and carefully applied stone cladding. Warmth and cohesion are achieved with American White Oak used extensively throughout, paired beautifully with cedar timber window joinery.”

The natural stonemasonry in the award-winning Fendation build was executed by local experts Terraforma.

Stone

One of the standout features of the Fendalton home is the stonemasonry carried out by Terraforma Stonemasonry. “The key to a build like this one is to have everyone in your team understanding the vision,” says director Mark Robberds. “I’m proud of my crew for understanding that, and the attention to detail that it demands – the results speak for themselves. The Terraforma team loved working with H+M Builders and the PRau team on this beautiful house.”

Swimming pool

Another feature that elevates this family home to luxe living is the swimming pool, designed and built in Christchurch with premium stainless steel by Stainless Pools, specialists in the design and manufacture of luxury residential swimming pools. “Combining European-inspired style, precision craftsmanship, and turnkey installation, we create durable, low-maintenance pools tailored for modern homes and lifestyles that are redefining luxury outdoor living in New Zealand,” says managing director Elliott Hall.

Roofing

Finally, to top it all off, roofing was done by The Architectural Roofing Company. “This was a special job,” says technical and specification manager Driss Taybi. “At the heart of the project is a roof crafted from Roofinox stainless steel, a material rarely seen on New Zealand roofs but admired around the world for its remarkable longevity, resilience, and quiet elegance.

Installed using the traditional single-lock standing seam method, the roof has been designed to protect the home for generations while developing a character that only time can create.”
