Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen investigates solutions to the pressing issue of how to keep your coffee within arm’s reach from the sofa this winter. Say hello to the C table.

Sometimes coffee tables are just too far away. When you’re settled deep into the sofa on a cold and dark winter’s evening, underneath a blanket with the cat glued to your lap and an engrossing crime thriller on the television, that hot drink you’re enjoying needs to be well within arm’s reach. Nobody wants to be in the awful situation where you can see your hot drink on the coffee table, but you can’t quite reach it without having to move and disturb the cat. Nobody wants that.

Thankfully, there is a solution to this upsetting predicament.

Say hello to the functional and beautiful C table, so named because it’s kind of shaped like a C.

Once purely practical, these slim little side tables have evolved into stylish multitaskers and are increasingly a must-have in Canterbury’s most stylish homes: a perch for morning coffee, a laptop station for working from the sofa, or a polished spot for a favourite ceramic mug and the latest weekend read. Or your phone, let’s be honest.

Variations on the C table can be found at most furniture stores. Pictured, Tromso Sofa Side Table.

What makes the C table so appealing is its versatility. The base slides neatly beneath a sofa or armchair, allowing the tabletop to hover conveniently within arm’s reach. They’re ideal for compact living spaces as well as open-plan homes.

The latest C table styles feature warm oak finishes, rounded edges, matte-black steel frames, glass, brass, textured timber, stone-look tops and sculptural forms that feel more boutique hotel than utility furniture.

The effect feels grounded, cosy and relaxed enough for everyday living, but refined enough to elevate your interior.

In many ways, the C-shaped table encapsulates where interiors are heading in 2026: smaller footprints, softer forms, and furniture that’s functional without sacrificing style. Or feline convenience.
