At 120 years old, the iconic Dunedin Railway Station was ready for a new lease of life, and the beautiful building recently got just that.

After a five-year hibernation in the wake of Covid-19, the newly rebranded Dunedin Railway Station is open for business as the starting point for the region’s globally renowned scenic train tours, The Taieri Gorge and The Seasider.

“After doing some market research, we found that people didn’t make the connection between the scenic train tours and the Dunedin Railway building,” says marketing and partnerships manager Brydie Meinung.

“Thousands of people come through each year to take photos of the building, but they had no idea it was an operating station from where trains departed. So, we’ve brought the Dunedin Railway Station building under the wider brand. We’re reinforcing that this is a fully operational railway station and are working to reconnect the station with the train journeys themselves,” Brydie says. “We also work a lot with Great Journeys and The Mainlander, both journeys that begin in Christchurch.”

All scenic train trips depart from and return to the Dunedin Railway Station, which is located at 22 Anzac Avenue in the heart of Ōtepoti Dunedin city.

Architectural excellence: Dunedin Railway Station

Described as an ‘outstanding monument of Edwardian-era architecture in New Zealand,’ as well as the most photographed building in the country, the Dunedin Railway Station was opened in February 1906 after a two-year construction period.

Designed by architect George Troup, the building is a testament to the skills of its stone masons, the tile makers and creators of its stained-glass windows. The building now contains the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame and the Otago Art Society’s gallery.
