Award-winning hairstylist Sarah McGuigan says confidence comes from choosing a colour that feels authentic to your personal style. We sat down with the owner of Cashmere’s Savvy Hair to find out how to choose and wear your next colour with flair.

Q. Sarah, how can readers find out which hair colour is right for them?
A. The best hair colour complements your skin undertone, eye colour, lifestyle, and maintenance preferences. Most people look their best staying within two to three shades of their natural colour and enhancing it with tone and dimension.

Q. Which colours are most popular, and which hairstyles complement them?
A. Current favourites include ‘expensive brunette,’ lived-in balayage blonde, glossy espresso tones, and modern copper shades. Layered cuts and soft waves enhance highlights and dimension; blunt bobs and sleek styles make darker colours appear richer and more polished; face-framing pieces help brighten your complexion regardless of colour choice.

Q. What colours would you suggest for olive versus cool-toned skin?
A. If you’re olive-toned, choose from chocolate browns, caramel balayage, honey highlights, copper browns, and neutral blondes. Avoid overly ashy shades that can look flat. For a cool skin-tone, lean into ash brown, cool beige blonde, platinum, blue-black, and burgundy tones. Avoid overly warm or brassy colours.

Q. What does colour maintenance look like?
A. Maintenance varies by colour choice, so choosing a colour that matches your lifestyle is key. For balayage and dimensional brunettes: low maintenance (three months between appointments). Toning gloss to refresh at about six weeks.

For traditional blondes: six to eight weeks moderate upkeep with toning and treatments. For red and copper colours: you’ll need higher maintenance due to faster fading. Luckily, we can create custom take-home conditioners matched to your exact shade to maintain your colour. Call 03 942 4179 or visit savvyhair.co.nz to book.
