10am: Feed the ducks at Darfield Reserve
Pack some fruit and vegetable scraps, and lay out a picnic blanket beside the lake. The resident ducks will be great company as long as you keep the snacks coming.
11am: Darfield Art Gallery
While away an hour or so on a leisurely stroll around Darfield’s art gallery.Showcasing diverse artists, the gallery helps foster local talent by giving Selwyn’s emerging artists a platform.

12pm: Grab some lunch
Wander up South Terrace and check out the Dalethorpe House Café and Store (a great spot for shopping, too).
1pm: Time for ice cream
The Darfield Dairy on South Terrace is famous for being home to the biggest ice-creams in Canterbury. Get licking.
2pm: Darfield town walks
After lunch, head out for some sightseeing. Starting from the Clock Tower, you can follow the scenic walking routes through the township and discover historic landmarks, shops, and local character. These are easy walks that take about an hour. For something that involves more nature, there are two great options on the outskirts of town:
- McHughs Forest Park is right on the edge of town, a 43-hectare reserve with flat walking and biking tracks through beautiful forest. There’s a fun element too: fairy doors are hidden throughout the tracks, which makes it magical to explore. Dogs are welcome on leash, and it’s family-friendly.
- Kowai Bush Scenic Reserve is about 8km away and offers easy loop walks through dense beech forest with real historical significance. It’s accessible, peaceful, and a great way to experience native forest.

5pm: Wine and dine at the Grain & Grape
Time for an aperitif followed by dinner. Open till 10pm every evening, the Grain & Grape on South Terrace is the place to unwind and relax with delicious local and artisan food and excellent wines. The diverse array of dishes includes pumpkin and truffle risotto, classic Kiwi sirloin, and roasted vegetable pizza. From Steak Night Mondays to Cocktail Night Thursdays, every evening has a special offer. grainandgrape.co.nz

Darfield is famously called ‘The township under the Nor’ West Arch’ due to a frequent weather pattern creating a flat cloud arch over the mountains to the west.
