Q. “I’m age 47 and I’ve been using eyeliner almost every day since I was 16. Should I change the way I use eyeliner as I get older?”

Short answer: yes, small tweaks may help. Eyeliner can need an update because, as we age, lashes can thin, lids can droop, and harsh lines can make eyes look smaller or heavier. Here are three tips for flattering, mature eyes.

1. Soften the colour
Try charcoal, espresso, deep plum, or navy instead of jet black, especially for daytime. Black still works at night or when smudged. Avoid dry pencils that tug, creamy pencils and gel liners glide better than stiff ones.

2. Smudge instead of sharp lines
Very crisp, thick lines can emphasise texture. Use a slightly smudged pencil or shadow liner. Apply, then gently blur with
a brush or cotton swab before it sets.
Tip: Apply, then gently blur with a brush or cotton swab before it sets.

3. Rethink the lower lash line
Full liner all the way across the bottom can drag eyes down. Try lining only the outer third or using shadow instead of pencil. Or skip it entirely
and focus on lashes.

The most important rule?
Do you. If your current eyeliner still makes you feel confident and polished, keep doing it.
