Garage door maintenance hacks: Garador Christchurch

Your garage door works harder than almost any other part of your home – opening and closing day after day, year after year. Yet it’s easily overlooked until it refuses to budge.

Aaron Harvey of Garador Christchurch says regular maintenance is the key to avoiding costly repairs.

“A well-maintained garage door should last 15 to 20 years,” he explains, “so it makes sense to keep an eye on it. Maintenance not only saves money on costly callouts but also boosts home security and keeps your garage warmer through winter.”

When to call the experts
Some problems are best left to the professionals. Aaron recommends calling an expert if your opener strains or stalls, or if the door appears unbalanced – falling shut or drifting open when lifted halfway. “An unbalanced door puts extra pressure on the opener and tracks,” he says. “Getting it fixed early prevents further damage.”

Invest in a Reliable Garage Door at Garador Christchurch
As well as being maintenance and repair experts, Garador also install new garage doors. If your garage door is nearing the end of its lifespan, it may be more cost-effective to upgrade to a new one. Tips for maintaining your garage door

  1. Keep it moving
A noisy garage door often signals dry rollers or hinges. Twice a year, give all moving parts a light coating of silicone-based lubricant (avoid WD-40, which attracts dust). While you’re there, tighten any loose bolts or screws – vibrations from daily use can cause them to shake free over time. But don’t overdo it. Tighten just enough to secure them to avoid stripping threads.
  2. Clean and check
Dust and grit in the tracks can make the door struggle. Wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild detergent to keep things gliding effortlessly. Then test the auto-reverse safety feature: place a small object, such as a block of wood, under the door. If it doesn’t immediately reverse when closing, it’s time to call a technician.
  3. Seal out the elements
Weather seals do more than keep out rain and pests – they improve insulation. Inspect the rubber strip along the bottom of the door and the side seals. Cracks or gaps mean heat loss (and higher energy bills), so replace them when needed.
