In and around Ōamaru
Quaint and historic, Ōamaru is a dreamy slow-down escape. For a night, a weekend, or the whole week, put this city of heritage back on your radar and dive into all there is to experience near and far.
IN
- Ōamaru Lookout Point, at 1 Tamar Street, Southhill, is a gorgeous spot to take in the beautiful scenery the city boasts. Take a book, a picnic, or just the company of your loved ones and appreciate nature. Locals say the views are best enjoyed at sunrise or sunset.
- If you have done it before, it’s worth doing again. Find a spot at Bushy Beach Reserve or the Blue Penguin Colony to see the rarest penguin in the world, the yellow-eyed penguin. Watch them waddle and grab your attention – a wonderfully relaxing way to spend a few hours.
AROUND
- Just under 30 minutes from Ōamaru, the Moeraki boulders are a must-see. Slowly facing erosion, the boulders are an interesting spectacle with a breathtaking beach backdrop. Perhaps make an early morning dash to catch the sunset and capture some gorgeous snaps.
- On your road trip there or back, visit the Riverstone castle, an incredible creation built from local Ōamaru stone by Dot and Neil Smith. It was a dream turned reality for Dot, with a childhood wish to live in a castle.
