A pint and a punt: Hornby Club

Cup and Show Week is always keenly anticipated by the hospitality sector in Christchurch. It’s a chance for various venues to show off their facilities and food in great celebratory style.

The Hornby Club is no exception in its excitement at being part of this special Canterbury event. The club’s celebration of Cup Week has been a st

aple for members and locals for more than 20 years with spring racing a long-time love of many Hornby Club members. There is something especially great about watching the results with true enthusiasts.

In the wake of the club’s redevelopment, support of the day has been growing steadily, attracting even more Christchurch residents to ‘Club Life’. Completed in December 2022, the Hornby Club’s redevelopment has created a perfect venue for large events, including Cup Week.

Tim Mathews, GM of Hornby Club, says, “The club has a big following of sport and racing, so celebrations like Canterbury’s Cup Week are a natural fit. We offer a thrilling atmosphere for those who like a bet or two and for those who just enjoy a fabulous day out.”

On Cup Day, the Hornby Club offers manned and self-service TAB terminal service, meat pack raffles, spot prizes and the all-important breakfast buffet of bacon, eggs and all the trimmings. “It’s a great day out for members and guests. We host the breakfast buffet for those looking to get their seats early for a day of racing. Who doesn’t like a glass of bubbles to kick off the proceedings? The great thing about watching racing from the club is that you can enjoy benefits such as an on-site TAB and a view of the races on our big screen.

“Our 4x6m screen and 16 tap offerings certainly help to build the atmosphere. So too do the passionate punters with their betting tips and trotting knowledge. Many of our members have their favourite horses and the roar from the crowd as they come across the line is unmissable to see and hear.”

The Hornby Club welcomes those heading to the races looking for quick bubbles and breakfast, so book your tickets for the buffet breakfast in advance. For those looking to stay on and enjoy the day, don’t forget to enjoy a flutter and perhaps walk away with a meat pack or more.
