Versatility & innovative design equals extra room: Loburn Sawmill

True entrepreneurs are not satisfied with one innovation only. They are continually looking for new ideas or refinements to their original concepts.

This is certainly true of the team at Loburn Sawmill. Not content with designing and building functional, durable and portable timber cabins, they came up with an idea for an extension in the form of a covered deck, with an iron roof and half-timbered walls, which can be fitted with roller blinds for year-round use.

“It’s rather like a pergola attached to the cabin,” says marketing manager Jess Aldridge. “The whole idea of our cabins is to provide people with extra space without building an expensive home extension. The covered deck extends the cabin area even more by an extra 4.2 metres of covered space.”

Jess says that she has heard of all kinds of uses being made of the covered decks. “Versatility is truly the name of the game and our customers are nothing if not imaginative. The decks have become all-weather barbecue areas, bars, dining spaces, even a laundry. We can, of course, put power points in the covered deck.”

With such versatility in mind, the team at Loburn Sawmill developed its original cabin concept. They recognised people’s need for extra space for all kinds of reasons, perhaps for accommodation, a workshop, hobby room, art studio, office, or playroom. The covered deck just takes the various adaptations one step further.

Like the standard cabins, the covered decks are framed with Douglas fir timber. There are two sizes of cabin, 4200 x 2650mm and 5800 x 2650mm. Each size can be matched with a comparable-sized covered deck. Each cabin has a black iron Colorsteel rib roof and double-glazed black aluminium joinery in the windows and sliding doors.

Wool insulation in the walls and ceiling assists with energy efficiency, and the floors are self-insulated 45mm tongue and groove. The interior walls are clad in solid timber tongue and groove panelling of either larch or macrocarpa while New Zealand larch weather board clads the exterior of the cabins and the covered deck.

The cabins and deck can be stained with coloured wood oil tints to suit any location or back drop. “Come and see our range of cabins and decks at our site on Fletchers Road in Loburn,” says Jess. They are made with quality materials with a low carbon footprint, and are packed with character and stunning good looks too.”
