Curves: the art of nature

Historically, curvaceous women such as Greek love goddess Aphrodite, painter Ruben’s voluptuous models, and movie star Marilyn Monroe, have been upheld as representative of beauty.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and curves still reign supreme. The average dress size is not eight, 10, 12 or even 14. It is size 16, making what is called in the fashion industry “plus size” actually normal size.

Wedding dress designers understand this, and recommend and create gowns that are flattering in fit, and make their wearers feel confident while looking radiant. Understanding your body shape is part of the journey.

Plus-size body types and their flattering dress styles include:
Apple: Broad shoulders and a fuller midsection.
DRESS: Empire waist or A-line dress with a V-neck or sweetheart neckline, to flow gently over your midsection, elongating your torso.

Hourglass: Well-defined waist, balanced hips and shoulders.
DRESS: Choose a mermaid or trumpet silhouette with a sweetheart or scoop neckline, to hug your curves and emphasise your waist. The neckline will enhance your bust.

Inverted Triangle: Broad shoulders and narrower hips.
DRESS: Find an A-line or ball gown silhouette with a detailed skirt. This will balance your shoulders and hips, while the skirt adds volume to your lower half.

Pear: Narrow shoulders and fuller hips.
DRESS: An A-line or ballgown silhouette will balance your proportions. Match this with detailing and embellishments on the bodice to draw attention upwards.

Rectangle: Straight, balanced proportions from shoulders to hips.
DRESS: A sheath or empire waist dress will create curves. Add embellishments, ruching, or a belt for more definition.
