Canterbury Property Investors Association: Adding value for Canterbury’s landlords
A problem shared is a problem halved, or so the adage goes. Luckily, Christchurch landlords can share their trials, tribulations, and triumphs with like-minded business investors, thanks to the Canterbury Property Investors Association.
From helpful advice to law changes, solutions to specific problems, and bright ideas, the association’s regular networking get-togethers are proving a valuable source of information, and inspiration, for its members.
In addition to regular events, both social and business, the association hosts knowledgeable guest speakers, providing valuable insight into a wide range of industry associated facets.
An example is its 17 September Investing in Property & Investing in Shares forum to be held in the Camelot Room at the Chateau on the Park, A DoubleTree by Hilton, debating the merits of both forms of investment. Future speakers include CoreLogic chief economist Kelvin Davidson in November.
A major event on the calendar is the New Zealand Property Investors (NZPIF) conference at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre in October, hosted by the local association. The conference theme is Changing Landscapes, inspired by the rebirth and ongoing evolution of Christchurch. International keynote speaker is Michael Yardney, along with a wide range of knowledgeable industry and other experts to help navigate the changing landscapes of property investing.
The last few months have been busy for the association, says its president, Nigel Barker. “We have had some excellent speakers, and well attended events,” he explains. “In July, Nikki Smith, Landlord of the Year, spoke to members about her journey from one to three properties in quick succession. It got her hooked-on property, both as a form of income, and a way to quit her day job, and provide homes for amazing families and micro-communities.
“Her story is inspirational. Eight years after she started, she won the 2023 NZPIF Rentskills Supreme Award – Landlord of the Year.” Another well-attended event was a Women in Property get-together at a local café, while Nigel personally recommends the association’s Coffee @ Riccarton House. “It is well attended and a great forum to ask any questions; a lot of development focused people attend this event.”
MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS ADVANTAGES
The association is all about networking for its members so they can learn from others, explains Nigel. “Our membership model enables us to bring great speakers to Christchurch, and our sponsors have excellent access to a large group of engaged property investors who require a wide range of services.” Sponsorship at a Silver Level is $1250 per annum and comes with a wide range of benefits and exposure.
“We’re keen to connect with other property investors, hear their strategies for success, plus have some fun along the way,” says Nigel. Members and prospective members do not need to own property, just an interest in property investment, and/or how to be a better landlord. “We host about five events monthly, with many industry experts including mortgage brokers, solicitors, and accountants who regularly network with our members,” says Nigel.
Members include both young and the more mature, first-time investors, and seasoned professionals. “They may have one rental property or 50, but they all have one thing in common: a passion for property investment,” he adds.
