Styling by size

For those genetically blessed humans, garments are made and fit beautifully.

Then, there are those of us who must trip to the tailor with each new piece we buy, or track down a store that caters to added fabric on pants and sleeves.

Proportions are a critical aspect of shopping and styling. It can be the thing that makes oversized look fitted, or far more oversized than it was meant to be. Dressing for shape is important, and there are many resources out there to determine more flattering styles for pear, triangle, rectangle, or apple body types. Yet for some, height is an increasingly demanding proportion to navigate, especially as oversized clothing continues to trend.

The beautiful Juliette Hogan and Alice Feutz from Juliette Hogan demonstrate this concept perfectly. In their ‘Playing with Proportions’ edit, the pair try on the Bernadette blazer, Peak Tuxe jacket, and Francesca pant. Juliette at 172cm, and Alice 154cm, and despite their similar aesthetics and style preferences, the clothes look and sit differently. Note how the blazer transforms the silhouette between Juliette and Alice’s frames.

Next time you take to the shops, consider size in a different way, like the length of your legs and torso. Make a point to look at how different garments will flatter your features. Remember, clothes are meant to fit you, not the other way around.
