Steering to satisfaction
Consumer NZ’s survey of New Zealand’s best and worst cars revealed our favourite brands, and those we don’t love so much.
Earlier this year, results were released from the over 8000 Kiwis surveyed and 72 models reported on.
Brands such as Honda, BYD, and Tesla have won the hearts of New Zealanders, winning People’s Choice. Scoring low on the list for reliability and owner satisfaction included brands such as Volkswagen, Holden, Ssangyong, Mitsubishi, and Ford.
Consumer’s product test manager James le Page says satisfaction does depend on the needs and expectations of the user. “One person might be interested in a comfy ride and a good stereo. Another may value driving performance above all else.”
The survey found EV and hybrid car owners to be the most satisfied drivers overall. However, of those who currently drive petrol or diesel vehicles, only 13% would buy an EV in the future.
James says price and “range anxiety” could be to blame for why drivers are reluctant to purchase an EV. “Non-EV owners are generally reluctant to embrace an EV, but once they do, it’s hard to go back to driving a petrol or diesel car again,” he says.
“While the price and lack of range are the obvious barriers, environmental factors, such as how we recycle or dispose of EV batteries, have crept higher up the list of concerns,” he adds.
