Targeting acne-prone skin

Acne is a common skin condition, occurring when hair follicles under the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, causing whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples.

Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages, including menopausal women. Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin, so the earlier treatment starts, the lower your risk of such problems.
Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. In older adults, a sudden onset of severe acne may signal an underlying disease requiring medical attention, so see your doctor.
For many women, acne can persist for decades, with flare-ups common a week before menstruation, during perimenopause, and menopause. This type of acne usually clears up without treatment for women who use contraceptives.
Treatments are many and varied. Some nonprescription acne lotions, cleansers and other skin products can cause a serious reaction, so use cautiously.
