Greening your space
Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions.
Simply put, it is adding lush green plants, and letting in light and air to your environment, all of which may be easily done at home and work.
AT HOME – Let in fresh air, maximise natural light, incorporate plants, use natural materials, embrace the shapes and colours of nature, think about a water feature, hang a piece of art.
IN THE OFFICE – Utilise natural materials, light, and patterns, to construct a built environment that maintains a connection to the natural world. Biophilic design in commercial buildings has been found to have restorative qualities, boosting employee well-being and psychological health.
Simple (non-structural options) include a green wall comprising hanging or wall-mounted planters with an assortment of greenery, an outdoor courtyard with plants, trees and a water feature, arranging office furniture to work with rather than against the light, and opt for natural over synthetic materials to bring in patterns, shapes, and textures from nature indoors.
Biophilia originates from Greek, literally meaning a love of life or living things.
