Keep them in or out

A hot topic for debate is what’s best for your feline friends? Keeping them indoors or outdoors?

While there’s obvious drawbacks for each, we’ve provided a full rundown on what keeping, or not, your kitty cooped up can do. Arguments for indoor cats suggest longer life expectancy and reduced risk on wildlife, while outdoor cat owners say there’s nothing better for their feline’s well-being than the excitement and adventure of the outdoors. The ethics behind it provide no simple answer. We suggest keeping a watchful eye on outdoor cats and putting time aside to entertain and exercise indoor cats.

INDOOR:
Requires kitty litter and you’ll have to negate the smell.
Builds an affectionate bond between cat and owner, but can be damaging to the
cat’s emotional well-being during prolonged periods of absence.
Prone to anxiety, obesity, and boredom.
Safe from outside danger but inside falls can still occur.
OUTDOOR:
Provides stimulating elements beneficial to a cat’s mental and physical health.
Reduces poor behavioural activity.
Exposed to human inflicted danger such as petnapping or roadside accidents.
Instinct of defending territory can cause neighbourhood cat combat.
Fun fact:
Labelled a ‘cat curfew’, recent Australian laws
in all but two states require
cat owners to always
keep their felines on their property or inside
at night.
