Attenborough’s map app
David Attenborough is one of the most loved and respected travel and nature documentary producers on the planet.
During his 70-year career, he has presented from 330 locations across 83 different countries and territories. Now nature lovers can follow his footsteps with an interactive map to mark every location he has recorded in.
Armchair explorers can also use it to plot his travels (and theirs) on more conventional wall maps and globes.
From British-based company Explore Worldwide, the map app allows users to compare their own travel history with David’s, helping them to create a unique bespoke map of their adventures, and showing how ‘David Attenborough’ they have been.
Researchers watched numerous hours of David’s documentaries, dating back to 1955, collated the data, and then visualised it in an interactive map.
The study logged locations from 43 different shows, including early Zoo Quest episodes from the 1950s, the epic 1979 series Life on Earth and 2020’s The Green Planet.
The places David presented from most are California, and the island of Borneo. His most visited countries are USA (57 appearances), Australia (37), and the UK (29).
Remote locations included Lake Fuxian in China, Cape Royds in Antarctica, Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, and Meru National Park in Kenya.
Born in May 1926, David was 30 years old when his first nature documentary Zoo Quest to Guiana aired.
Now aged 96, he has been sharing with viewers worldwide the planet’s incredible animals, plant life, oceans, and natural habitats for more than
65 years, becoming an advocate for wildlife conservation and awareness of the devastating impacts of climate change.
