Editor’s perspective: We are sailing

As this issue’s front cover proclaims loud and clear, the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix is coming to Lyttelton.

What that means is a chance for Kiwis to see this adrenaline-pumping water sport up close and personal, and also to showcase Christchurch to the rest of the world.
Seaside spectator tickets to view the racing on Lyttelton Harbour sold out pre-Christmas.

However, those who missed out can still be part of the live action, via a special fan base in the central city, while enjoying its hospitality. Don’t forget big screens can often show more close-up action than actually being there. It is coming, so save the date, 18 and 19 March.

Throughout history there are certain happenings worthy of mention for future prosperity. SailGP is one of them, and hopefully the inaugural Lyttelton series is just the beginning for this event.

Another noteworthy (now historic) event is the sudden resignation of our former
Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. While politically polarising, Jacinda brought New Zealand into the world spotlight for many good reasons.

Love her or not, the fact is that Jacinda is highly regarded in many international political arenas, and notched up several “firsts”. Politics is often a thankless task, and many former politicians will empathise with her “getting out”. There is life after politics.

Speaking of getting out, it is time for Cantabrians to start planning to get out and catch some action on the waves at Lyttelton next month.
