Reinventing quality furniture: Quality Furniture
When quality is there, a revamp beats a replace any day.
“Some years back, my good friend acquired the family’s old lounge suite. It was a solid, robust old Kovacs suite, with big rolled arms, built to last generations,” retells Neke McDonald of McDonald and Hartshorne, quality furniture and reupholster specialists.
“She had countless discussions over three years with her husband about getting it reupholstered. He was not keen, so dragged her around furniture stores looking at modern styles. When spotting one he liked, she would pick up one end and exclaim ‘no way, look how light the frame is. It won’t last at all.’ The fact my small-built friend could easily lift a settee was sure sign the frame wasn’t a solid deal. It was always stalemate.
“When visiting us one day, they wandered into the factory to say hi to the team, who happened to be working on a suite similar to their solid heirloom. The new upholstery caught their attention, as each piece was creatively finished in a different fabric, but with the same colour story.
“The next thing you know, we had the samples out. It was all on! He was just as keen as she was. They chose fabrics, plus extra fabric for other pieces in their room, then it was all booked, and sorted.”
