Two Kiwi sisters have created a woollen fashion brand that gives back.
In an age of fast fashion – where mass-produced garments are worn briefly before ending up in landfill – a New Zealand business offers a refreshing alternative. Founded by sisters Nikki and Claudine Douglas, who grew up in rural New Zealand, Mount Kiwi creates enduring, unique, woollen clothing designed to last a lifetime, not just a season.
The inspiration for the business came 20 years ago when Claudine visited Kathmandu and met an eight-year-old girl named Rita, who sold bags after school to help support her family.
The encounter later sparked a desire in Claudine to create opportunities for women in Nepal to earn a sustainable income.
Back in New Zealand, Claudine and Nikki launched Mount Kiwi, bringing premium, sustainably sourced New Zealand wool directly to the world online.
Today, Rita, now 30, stands at the heart of the sisters’ Nepal operation. New Zealand-grown strong-wool is hand-knitted into signature pieces, creating vital livelihoods that allow women to earn while caring for their families. “We wanted to create clothing that tells a story and stands the test of time,” says Nikki.
