Thumbs up for overseas product approval reforms

The Government’s recent announcement to streamline the approval of overseas building products is a welcome and practical reform for our sector.

At Master Builders, we’ve long advocated for a system that gives builders more flexibility to use safe, high-quality products and reduces the unnecessary red tape that drives up costs and causes delays.

Builders across New Zealand have faced rising material costs and limited supply options. In Canterbury, when we’ve surveyed our members, the rising cost of construction has been cited as one of the most critical issues facing the sector. Any move from the Government that helps address these cost pressures is welcome.

By opening access to a wider range of internationally-certified products, we can strengthen supply chain resilience, reduce build times, and ultimately deliver more homes, faster and more affordably.

This is not about lowering standards. It’s about aligning with trusted global benchmarks, boosting competition, and giving our members the tools they need to get the job done quicker and more affordably.
