Summit to sea: Run Akaroa

What if your running resolution or step count challenge was disguised as a charming weekend getaway amongst Akaroa’s seaside spell?

No tourists. No traffic. Just you and the Summit Road, with the shimmering Akaroa Harbour on one side and the vast South Pacific on the other. The inaugural Run Akaroa on Sunday 17 May, delivers one of the most breathtaking courses in New Zealand; each step tracing the rim of an ancient volcano. Let the scenery, serenity and fresh ocean air take your focus as kilometres go by.

Race around the rim or walk and talk with friends – this event is built for everyone, from first-timers chasing a big milestone to elite athletes chasing speed – where dinner at a French restaurant and a bottle of wine awaits.

The morning after, let a warm pastry and piping hot coffee accompany a stroll along the seaside before you wander the streets or encounter the wildlife. Local businesses like Black Cat Cruises and Akaroa Dolphins are offering up race weekend discounts for entrants (do the mahi, get the treats, right?). The weekend writes itself.

RUNNING, ELEVATED
Start at 450 metres above sea level and choose the marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21km) or 10km distance, with the Black Cat Cruises Kids Dash making it an opportune family affair. Each course is crafted with maximum wow-factor and carefully curated traffic management plans so you can take in the 360 degree views safely.

The race begins along Summit Road above Little Akaloa, winding around the ancient volcano, before Akaroa village comes into view at the crater rim – a motivating ‘marker’ to push through the last few kilometres.
