Christchurch is bucking national trends in many ways – sell-out events, buzzing hospitality, record growth – fast becoming New Zealand’s favourite place to live, work and play. A successful post-earthquake transformation is partly to thank, alongside the vibrant new developments crafting the lifestyles Kiwis want to live.

Between large-scale, master-planned subdivisions and more boutique developments, Christchurch’s infrastructure is experiencing a major revitalisation. According to the latest Canterbury Construction Report, a total of 7541 new dwellings were consented across Greater Christchurch, representing annual growth of 31.7% from April 2025. Total consented value increased to almost $2.9 billion.

New subdivisions in locations like Cashmere, Halswell, Selwyn and Rangiora are unlocking sought-after land and slower lifestyles, balanced by close proximity to a world-class city central.

ChristchurchNZ’s city snapshot shares a glimpse into the demand driving new developments and lifestyle opportunities. It reports that 7% of Christchurch’s population were living in the North Island five years prior, and 9000 people moved to Christchurch from overseas in 2024. With high demand from locals, too, looking for a new way to live – community-centric subdivisions, modern infrastructure, more relaxed lifestyle-focused locations – not even rising construction costs can slow development down.

For Canterbury residents, the subdivision boom means a fresh way of life could be just around the corner. You just have to find the right spot.
