Strong result, strong city: Justin Watson

Christchurch Airport is flying high, with profits up 24% in a year.

There’s a real buzz around our airport at the moment. What I’m most proud of isn’t just the growth, it’s the confidence we all have in Christchurch and the South Island.

Over the past six months, we’ve worked closely with airlines to add flights and grow capacity. We’ve announced new domestic jet services, strengthened international connections and kept telling the story of our city and Te Waipounamu in key markets. On our campus, businesses like DHL, Pratt & Whitney and high-tech Enatel are investing for the long term, creating jobs and backing innovation right here in Ōtautahi.

In the terminal, the improvements we’ve made are lifting the experience on the journey from when you park all the way to the plane. Behind the scenes, we’re expanding freight infrastructure to support exporters and importers across the South Island. None of this happens by accident. It takes clear strategy, strong leadership and a capable team all pulling together.

That focus is reflected in our half-year profit, which is up 24 per cent on the same time last year.

The dividend we generate flows back to Christchurch through our parent company CCHL, helping support city services, infrastructure and the things we all love about our amazing city.

For me, it comes back to this, when our airport performs strongly, our city feels the benefit.
