‘Can’ you help fill a cupboard and a tummy this South Canterbury anniversary weekend?

Rising food costs, power bills, rent, and everyday expenses mean that more people are finding it difficult to put healthy meals on the table. For some South Canterbury children, hunger is a daily reality. The annual Food Drive for South Canterbury anniversary weekend helps support families that are doing it tough.

Hosted by Presbyterian Support South Canterbury’s (PSSC)Family Works, last year, more than 2000 food parcels were given to 5760 people across the region. Behind every parcel is a person, a child, a family, or an older person who needed a helping hand during a difficult time. In the week leading up to South Canterbury anniversary weekend on 26 to 28 September, get your school, ECE centre, workplace, sports team, church group, or friends involved by collecting non-perishable food items for the food bank. These can be dropped to Family Works,

The Courier newspaper or The Warehouse. Or on Friday 25 September you can ‘Drive through and drop off’ non-perishable items outside Speight’s Ale House and help build a wall of cans.

Poverty in our community is real, but so is the kindness of South Cantabrians. Let’s come together this anniversary weekend to show what community is all about.

Can you help fill up the Family Works Food Bank this South Canterbury Anniversary?

• Host a dress in green and black day to show your support for the South Canterbury Food Drive for Family Works.
  Bring a can or two instead of a gold coin, make a can tower or spell out South Canterbury.
• Donate instead of doing a can collection. Did you know that the average Food Parcel cost $30 a day. How many food parcels can you help Family Works purchase?
• Promote Family Works by decorating your workplace in green and black and share the services and amazing work that the Family Works team do to help so many in our community. Send us your pictures.
• Set up a donation box and display in your school/ECE/business reception – see how much you can collect from members of the public during South Canterbury Week.
• Hold a morning tea or quiz, a friendly games competition and instead of charging dollars get everyone to bring a can instead. Raise money in exchange for a song, poem, painting.Get creative, anything goes.
