Funnel necks have been named everything from the winter season’s chicest staple to the ultimate alternative to traditional turtlenecks – so what do you need to think about when shopping for your own?

I purchased my first funnel neck coat a few months before I saw them everywhere. It wasn’t a trend that tempted me, but the elegant structure, unique characteristics and 100% wool finish – elevated comfort at its finest (and the fact it was from a New Zealand brand).

Trend forecasting reports show a 892% jump in searches for funnel neck styles year on year, while menswear searches are up 194%. British Vogue’s headline ‘Why The Funnel-Neck Jacket Is On Every Editor’s Wishlist’, coupled with that of The Guardian: ‘Everyone from Meghan [Markle] to the Beckhams wants a funnel neck’ prove the power this piece holds in the 2026 winter wardrobe.

Why is the funnel neck a favourite?

• The high neck style offers warmth without the need for a scarf, while the funnel shape offers a wider, stiff, jawline-grazing collar for a less restrictive fit.
• Lending from Scandi-style, the funnel neck shape feels structured and sleek from the neckline down, for a sharp silhouette that also traps warmth in.
• They’re a versatile option, from coat to cardigan. Zip and button styles can often be half done up (from the top or bottom) for a relaxed or more triangular shape.
• Less bulk, more style. Funnel necks complement layering practices and work effortlessly under a coat, with more airflow and less bulk.
