Snug as a rug

There’s nothing like layering with a beautiful rug for creating warm and inviting spaces in your home during winter.

While summer calls for minimalism, winter is the season for more – more colour, more texture, more layers to create cosy and nurturing interiors. Where to start? From the floor up. The right rug can completely change a room and make or break a scene. Here are three things to consider for leveraging the full power of a good rug.

1. Season appropriate: Winter is the time to bring in heavier rugs that give your space colour, texture and interest. Those bare timber floors might be great in summer, but in winter, throw a rug down. Helps keep heat in and just feels cosier.

2. Luxury lift: Want to instantly add a sense of luxury? Layer a quality rug (100% wool – give synthetics a swerve) down on your carpet under a sofa or coffee table, or under your bed. Top tip: The most common mistake made by rookie rug buyers is going too small. When choosing rugs for seating areas, the corners of the long length should tuck under the sofa or chair legs. Measure your space before you buy.

3. Function and form: The first question any interior designer will ask is, ‘what will it be used for?’ In terms of rugs, consider how it works with other pieces, where in the home you’ll put it, and how much footfall it will have. For hallways and narrow spaces, go for a hall runner. In bedrooms, entryways, and for layering on bigger rugs, go for small rugs.
