Silver sneakers are having a moment

Throw everything you know about styling sneakers out the window. The fashion police have spoken: if they’re silver, you can wear them anywhere.

Welcome in the office (where walking meetings become your best friend) just as much as they are when dining at The Terrace, Vogue describes the silver sneaker as “jewellery for your foot”.

Where street cred meets comfort, the chrome colour is cool-girl coded without the squished toes and bunion. If that isn’t enough to convince you, take it from the sartorial elite like Dakota Johnson and Katie Holmes; celebrities are no stranger to the viral ‘dad’ sneaker.

Myself included. For the handfuls of silver sneakers I saw on the streets and in stores during a recent trip to Auckland, I regretfully came home with just one pair. It felt like each shop had a new style (picture me, eyes wide open and mouth agape when I came across a pair that was silver and covered in polka dots). When I came home and began research gathering (also known as window shopping), I discovered we are just as silver-smitten.

A silver sneaker screams chic – and it’s not settling for second place on your shoe rack.
