If there’s one thing that winter brings, it’s the desire to retreat to the sofa on a cold, dark evening surrounded with cushions, throws and blankets. For soft, warm and long-lasting furnishings, you can’t go past New Zealand possum fur, lambskin, calf hide and deer leather.
Geraldine-based Four Peaks Leather produces a range of home and living accessories ideal for making your home cosy and inviting. Everything from beautifully crafted sheepskin slippers to soft furnishings such as possum fur throws, calfskin cushions, and goat skin footstools.
Founded in 1995, Four Peaks Leather has always been about skilled people making beautiful products, say co-owners Sally Houston and Aaron Berry. The business continues to employ local craftspeople, producing everything from gloves to furnishings right here in New Zealand.
“There’s a growing appreciation for natural, New Zealand-made products,” Sally says. “It comes down to quality materials and craftsmanship.”
“Using lambskin, possum fur and premium leathers, everything made at Four Peaks Leather is designed to be loved for a lifetime. Lambskin in particular is beautiful, sustainable and underutilised,” Aaron says. “It’s naturally lightweight, breathable and incredibly comfortable, making it perfect for everyday wear and timeless pieces.”
Love of lambskin
Natural, warm and beautiful to wear, lambskin is an amazing product to work with, says Sally. “Our baby booties are our biggest seller, while our gloves remain forever popular, along with hats, but we have branched out into lambskin vests, furnishings and fashion accessories. While we do wholesale to a few international companies, we aim to push the international market and promote New Zealand-made.
Sourcing lambskin can be challenging, says Sally, because the skins come from casualty stock, in other words, the lambs that do not survive long.
“We have so many casualty lambs each spring, and they are being wasted by being thrown into a hole in the ground. Surely, they are worth something. We are determined to keep our business in New Zealand to keep people employed and to promote our country.”
