From surgical scars to skin grafts, scar camouflage tattooing offers a long-lasting solution for helping people feel more comfortable in their skin.

Visible scars can be a lasting reminder of surgery, injury or illness, but a new service from Angela Millar of KM Surgical is helping clients feel more comfortable in their skin. Known as scar camouflage tattooing, this specialised paramedical tattooing technique uses custom-blended skin-tone pigments to reduce the appearance of scars and create a more even complexion.

In 2025, Angela travelled to Australia to train with leaders in the field. She says the results can be remarkable. “Scar camouflage tattooing uses skin-toned pigments to blend visible scars into the surrounding skin, reducing their appearance and improving overall skin uniformity,” she explains.

One recent skin-graft case (pictured) following skin cancer surgery produced such impressive results that it drew praise from both dermatologists and plastic surgeons. “It’s something that’s been missing,” says Angela. “Now it’s a service we can offer.”

Frequently asked questions:

Q: When would you use scar camouflage tattooing? “It’s most suitable when a scar is lighter than the surrounding skin and has lost its natural pigment. We colour-match the area to the client’s skin tone to help it blend more naturally.”

Q: What conditions is it most suitable for? “The scar must be fully healed – typically nine to 12 months old, flat and no longer pink or red. It works well for surgical scars such as C-sections, facelifts and tummy tucks, as well as trauma scars, burns and skin grafts.”
