The number of Kiwis buying new vehicles reached a new record last year, with an almost 40 percent increase in new car registrations compared with 2020.

Motor Industry Association statistics show 2021 finished with a record-breaking 165,287 new car registrations, an increase of 38.3 percent over 2020.
Ford Rangers led the field with the most sales (almost 134,000), followed by the Toyota Hilux then the Mitsubishi Outlander.
Toyota dominated hybrid sales with the RAV-4, Corolla and Highlander coming in as the three top sellers.
