Centuries down the track, magazines such as fortnightly lifestyle magazine Metropol are still doing just that, despite misconceptions that paper is wasteful, detrimental to the environment and responsible for deforestation.
The truth is actually the reverse. Print media has evolved into a highly sustainable form of communication in today’s digital society. It’s been scientifically proven that growing trees – used to make paper – is good for planet earth. Readers are not destroying the planet by relaxing with a Metropol (or any other magazine or flyer) in their hands.
Using digital devices, powered by electricity produced from coal, can be far more harmful to planet earth, and New Zealand is currently using far more coal than ever before to generate electricity.
Jonathon Porritt, Co-Founder, Forum for the Future says that there aren’t many industries around that can aspire to becoming genuinely sustainable, however the paper industry is one that is inherently sustainable.
