Myself and deputy editor Tamara Pitelen gathered alongside the playmakers who brought this centrepiece to life, but it wasn’t the eyewatering $683 million construction cost that had us teary. Nor was it the pure scale of it, or the fact that it brings Robbie Williams to Christchurch in November. It was when we turned to the big screen for the stadium’s launch film that things got super blurry.
“In 2011, we lost everything.” The two-minute 55-second video opens with cherished Canterbury icon Simon Barnett stepping out onto an empty stage. “Not just our city, but our centre. Our certainty. Our sense of true belonging,” he continues.
A list of celebrated local figures follow, delivering powerful lines of the project’s – and our city’s – journey to get here (though don’t forget the 2.4 million hours worked by almost 4000 people). Every word echoed through an otherwise silent arena of colossal size. If you haven’t already, please go watch the short film, you can find it on Instagram @onenewzealandstadium.
One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha is a symbol of resilience, determination and dreaming. It’s the heartbeat of hope that didn’t stop until it had a home. It’s a product of blood, sweat and tears – tears that didn’t stop as we marked the opening of a venue that signals a new chapter for the city without forgetting our shaky history.
The ceremony felt like one big moment of pure power. To our communities, to our united strength, and to how far we’ve come. Like local rugby legend Dan Carter said, “This is more than a theatre of concrete and steel.” In celebration of the new star in our skyline, we’ve picked out the city’s best places to dine, shop, stay and play – plus shared with you some special stories from those on the inside, and the events to come.
Fill the seats with energy and fill the stadium with joy. Nau mai ki tō tātou kāinga hou. Welcome to our new home, Ōtautahi Christchurch.
