Otautahi’s pet ‘furtographer’

A Christchurch pet photographer (‘furtographer’) has spent 10 years travelling the world taking photos of dogs in iconic spots for his latest book, Dogs of the World.
For almost a decade, Ōtautahi photographer Craig Turner-Bullock has wandered the globe with camera in hand and dogs in his heart, capturing the spirit of nearly 70 breeds within the landscapes that helped shape them and which reflect their origins and histories.
From Tallulah the French bulldog snapped in front of the Louvre to Ginger the Pembroke Welsh corgi with London’s Tower Bridge behind her, those ten years of work are distilled into Craig’s latest book, Dogs of the World, which is “a celebration of culture, companionship and the powerful bond we share with our most loyal friends,” says Craig.
A brand ambassador for Fujifilm New Zealand, Craig was named New Zealand Portrait Open Photographer of the Year in 2018 at the Nikon/New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) Iris Awards, which was the first time the award was given for a work where the subject was not human.
This is Craig’s fourth book following Quake Dogs, Quake Cats and A Dog’s Life.
Originally from the Channel Island of Guernsey, he now lives in Christchurch,with his husband, their affenpinschers Ralph and Holly, and a Ragdoll cat named Mr Tinkles. As well as taking photos of people’s pets, he teaches pet ‘furtography’ globally through his online business, Unleashed Education.
An exhibition of images from Dogs of the World will be held from 19 to 25 October in the Pūmanawa community exhibition space within the Christchurch Arts Centre.
