Are you missing out on later-in-life lump sum growth due to a few simple errors?

One of the most critical considerations when investing is when you’re planning on spending your wealth, as a whole or in parts. This is called short, medium and longer-term investing (or planning), says financial adviser Alistair Bean.

“For the 32+ years that I worked at a bank, I would see clients come in and only want to invest for one year because they didn’t want to tie their money up for a long time,” Alistair says. “I would see those same clients come in each year for five, 10 and 15 consecutive years and yet still only invest for one year at a time.It was an opportunity lost. They missed out on the far higher returns of longer-term investments, for instance, managed funds and shares or bonds.

The solution, says Alistair, is to form a relationship with a financial adviser who can help you best allocate funds to the short and medium-term for yearly living needs and mid-term purchases such as car upgrades, home maintenance, overseas trips, family emergencies, education and the like. If you leave bulk lump sums in short-term investments, then somebody else is making money out of your money.

“They say time in the market is most important, but among other things, when interest rates and inflation are relatively low and growth opportunities appear high, it is time to speak to an investment financial adviser for investment portfolio and KiwiSaver needs. The biggest opportunity at present is likely in technology investments for the medium to longer-term, particularly with the current global desire for larger nations to stay ahead of each other.

“New Zealand does exceptionally well with technology,” Alistair says. “Look at Rocket Lab giving SpaceX a run for its money. Many billions of dollars are being poured into all kinds of technology and after recent US tariff scares, there have been reductions in pricing for these types of investments, which can offer significant growth. A financial adviser can remove a lot of the mystery involved in these specialist investments.”

Another opportunity is KiwiSaver, which now offers many types of investments, providers and funds. Alistair Bean and Associates – Financial Advisers are specialist investment and KiwiSaver advisers. Alistair focuses on Overall Lump Sum Client Investment and KiwiSaver needs, while Jordan Bean focuses on Younger Client and Women’s Investment and KiwiSaver needs. Catch up with Jordan at the Christchurch Women’s Expo in October. “Investing may sound quite daunting, but our role is to simplify it all. We work one-on-one with you to help make the best decisions for your investments.”
