MRI technology has advanced significantly in recent years, delivering faster scan times, exceptional image quality, and greater efficiency, says Reform Radiology’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Joel Dunn. “This is an exciting period of innovation in radiology, with these improvements enhancing the patient experience and quality of care we provide. Investing in state-of-the-art software enables us to offer best-in-class imaging with reduced scan times.” But MRI scans can be daunting, particularly if it’s a patient’s first experience.
“We’ve answered some of the questions our team is asked most often to help patients feel informed and prepared. We’re committed to combining the latest imaging technology with a supportive, patient-centred approach,” Joel explains.
What is an MRI scan?
MRI uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation.
Is an MRI scan painful?
No. MRI scans are completely non-invasive and painless. The most important thing is remaining as still as possible during the scan to ensure the images are clear.
I’m claustrophobic – what if I don’t like small spaces?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear. Reform Radiology has wide-bore MRI scanners, which have a larger opening than traditional MRI machines and can help patients feel more comfortable. Our experienced team will guide you through the process.

Why is the MRI machine so noisy?
The scanner makes a series of tapping and knocking sounds while images are being captured. You’ll be provided with ear protection, headphones and music, and many patients find the sounds become less noticeable once the scan is underway.
Can I have an MRI if I have metal in my body?
It depends on the type of metal. Before your appointment, you’ll complete a safety questionnaire, and our team will carefully review any implants, pacemakers, surgical clips or previous metal injuries to determine whether an MRI is appropriate for you.
How long will my MRI take?
Most MRI examinations take between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being scanned.
What makes Reform Radiology’s MRI scanners different?
Our MRI scanners use advanced AI software that helps produce exceptionally clear images while reducing the amount of time you need to spend in the scanner. By reducing image noise, we can maintain excellent image quality even with faster scan times.
