5 ways to maintain a low-fuss, nice-looking outdoor living area and garden.

Zero-fuss plants. Selecting plants that will strive in Canterbury is a simple way to make your life easier in the garden. Consider native favourites already used to New Zealand’s weather patterns. This includes hebes (compact and great for borders), Kānuka and Mānuka (hardy and attract pollinators with little watering) and harakeke (adds texture while standing up to harsh weather).
Ditch high-maintenance blooms. Avoid seasonal blooms, instead opting for year-round plants with complementing textures and colours (think glossy leaves paired with finely-textured grasses) so you don’t need to rely on seasonal, colourful garden beds.
Smart mulching. If you’re after less weeds and watering, and soil that takes care of itself, mulch is your best mate. It saves water, stops weeds, and protects roots. From black or brown bark to pea straw, there’s plenty of options at local landscaping sites to make your garden beds cohesive, aesthetic, and fuss-free.
Be clever with your lawn. Reducing your lawn with permanent outdoor elements like decking, seating areas, water features, gravel pathways and bigger borders is an obvious choice to cut down on mowing and maintaining your lawn. You can also install a permanent edge (such as bricks, paving stones or gravel at a lower level) to reduce time spent trimming edges. Remember to smooth out awkward angles or corners for a shape that’s easy to run a lawnmower over.
Automate watering. Being smart with your irrigation means you don’t have to spend every Sunday afternoon in the garden with a hose gun or watering can. It sounds relaxing until it’s an almost-daily chore in summer and you’d rather be sitting on your deck admiring your garden than standing around watering it. Invest in an automatic irrigation system to save time, conserve water and give plants the hydration they need. Drip irrigation and soaker hoses deliver water straight to the roots, while timers and controllers further prevent overwatering.
