Local confidence: Ross Steele

Four years on from its first conference, Te Pae is more than just a venue.

There’s something special about milestones that belong not just to an organisation, but to a city.

As Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre marks four years since its first conference, I’ve found myself reflecting less on the scale of events we’ve hosted, and more on what they’ve meant for our community. At its heart, Te Pae Christchurch has always been about people – bringing them together, sharing ideas, and creating moments that leave a lasting impression.

In that time, we’ve welcomed over 422,000 visitors to Ōtautahi Christchurch, each experiencing a city that has rediscovered its confidence and rhythm. A city where everything feels connected: from our walkable centre to the Ōtākaro Avon River, vibrant restaurants, green spaces, and our exciting new world-class stadium, alongside the warm welcome Cantabrians are known for.

What I’m most proud of is how deeply local this success is. Behind every international conference or major event is a network of Christchurch businesses, suppliers, and people working together to showcase the best of our region. This is a collective effort that extends well beyond the walls of a venue.

Our team lives by Manaaki o Te Pae – creating a genuine sense of welcome, caring for one another, and extending hospitality with heart. It’s what underpins events delivered with warmth, precision, and a strong sense of place.

Four years on, Te Pae Christchurch is more than a venue. It’s a reflection of a city that has come together, found its voice again, and is confidently sharing its story with the world. And from where I stand, that story is only just getting started.
