Financial Adviser Jordan Bean says it is well-known that women live longer than men, which requires a different approach to wealth planning.

The current statistics for life expectancy in Aotearoa show that, as of 2026, women are living to an average of 83.7 years old while men are living to 80.4 years of age. This is an average combined increase of about 12 years since the early 1950s. (Source: Stats NZ, 2026).

Many women are already looking after their own finances and planning for their current and future needs in retirement. Here at Alistair Bean and Associates – Financial Advisers, we have a selection of clients who are, in one way or another, independent women. It is excellent to see more women seeking advice for their investment and financial planning needs.

Personally, I first started taking control of my finances in high school, when I received my first allowance. I was very fortunate because my parents opened a bank account for me not long after I was born. They also opened a KiwiSaver account for me when they were first offered to the public, which meant I could benefit from an initial grant of $1000. Currently being reviewed by various political parties, I strongly believe this policy should be brought back for all New Zealand citizens.

As we pass through significant stages of life, our financial needs and priorities shift. These stages could be tertiary education and qualifications, getting established in a career, perhaps meeting a partner and starting a family, purchasing a first home and other assets, travelling the world, eventually retiring, and then ultimately estate planning. I can either assist you with all of these myself or point you in the direction of another specialist.

We will once again be at this year’s Women’s Lifestyle Expo 2026 in Christchurch at Wolfbrook Arena over the weekend of 10 to 11 October, so feel free to come along and have a chat to us.

Financial and investment planning is an absolute must for all women. It is something that can be achieved on your own or in combination with your partner. It is not as intimidating as it may seem and is something that I am delighted to help with. You can reach out to me through our website, call me on 027 226 6579 or email me at jordan@abafs.co.nz.
