Mary Outram’s winter edit at The Crossing

The coat stays on

I’m excited to be back with another seasonal feature for Metropol and The Crossing… this time built around winter dressing and the art of layering properly.

Winter style always feels a little more intentional to me. You can’t rely on just one great piece when it’s freezing outside… the coat becomes part of the outfit. And some of the best winter looks are the ones where the coat stays on.

I love elevated knitwear as the base of almost every outfit. A really good knit makes getting dressed feel easy… comfortable, flattering and warm. Add winter tights with knee-high boots (an essential over tights or tucked under trousers or jeans) and then your cosy coat layered on top.

For a Christchurch winter, a longline coat almost feels non-negotiable. Your coat can completely shift the feel of an outfit. A sharp wool coat feels polished, an oversized shape feels effortless, and a lighter outer layer instantly makes everything feel more lifted and bright. In winter, outerwear becomes part of the look, not just something thrown on before leaving the house.

This is winter dressing. With the coat staying on.
