As the year draws to a close, social calendars fill with festive gatherings. For many, though, hearing loss can turn these joyful occasions into moments of awkwardness and isolation. Help is close at hand.

“People are surprised to discover how modern and discreet today’s hearing aids are,” says Bellbird Hearing clinic manager and audiologist Juliet Marsden. “They’re designed to help you stay connected and confident – because life’s too short to miss out on conversations. With four levels of technology available, there’s something to suit every lifestyle and budget.”

Bellbird Hearing’s highly experienced team operate from two sites, Christchurch and Timaru. “Our wonderful front-office staff are always ready to lend a hand,” Juliet says. “Whether it’s answering questions or doing a quick hearing aid repair while you wait, they make sure our clients feel looked after from the moment they walk in. In addition to standard hearing checks, we run speech-in-noise assessments because many people hear well in quiet environments but struggle when there’s background chatter.”

The Bellbird Hearing website details the full suite of services, including hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings and repairs, and professional ear-wax removal. Wax build-up is one of the most common – and readily treatable – causes of hearing loss. Using gentle, microscope-guided microsuction, the team can safely remove wax, debris, or foreign bodies to restore hearing clarity.

Another issue they regularly help with is tinnitus – the persistent ringing or buzzing in one or both ears caused by inner ear damage. While there’s no cure, hearing aids can significantly reduce the symptoms, helping clients cope more comfortably.

“The earlier people come to see us, the better,” says Juliet. “If you have a friend or relative who seems to be missing out on conversation or is turning the volume up on the TV, bring them in for a free hearing screening. It’s quick, painless, and available to anyone over 18. In New Zealand, one in three people over the age of 65 is likely to experience hearing loss. The good news is that by actively monitoring your hearing health, you can significantly enhance your quality of life. We recommend everyone have a hearing check every one to two years.”
